The jet ride from Kansas to Hawaii had been long, and most of them had dozed off and on during it. It had been a long time since he'd been to Hawaii, and he had been looking forward to it now more than he had even the first time he'd gone. And now, as he lay back on one of the sandy white beaches of Kauai, sunglasses on and a pina colada in one hand, he smiled, listening to the quiet sounds of the ocean lapping at the beach.

"Come in, lazy-ass!" Mia called to Michael from the water. She pushed her wet hair over her shoulder and smoothed it back and up into a pony-tail. Then she waved the end of the shortened surf board at him. "I promised you a dunking."

Michael laughed and pushed himself up from the sand, jogging to the water, pants slung low on his hips. "Hey. I thought vacations were for being a lazy ass." His feet hit the water and a mischievous glint formed in his eye. "You're gonna dunk me? Oh, it's on."

"You can lie around being a lazy ass after you get some exercise," she teased, already sending a wave of water his way with her hands before slipping onto her stomach on the board and paddling away.

He put an arm up to avoid most of the water spray, then jogged after her, further into the ocean. "I don't know what you're talking about. I get plenty of exercise." He caught up to her, bringing his hand down in the water in an attempt to get revenge.

Shrieking, Mia rolled off the board and held it up to avoid the bulk of the wave. Then she flipped over and kicked her feet hard into the water to create an even bigger cascade raining down in his direction.

That wave hit him full on and he had to spit the water out of his mouth before making his next move. Without giving her much time to right herself, he pounced, grabbing her waist and taking them both down into the water. Forget making little waves, this game was serious business.

Reflex had Mia jabbing an elbow back hard into Miachael's solar plexus before she could stop herself and she came up sputtering and red faced. "Sorry! Oh my god, I'm sorry, are you okay?"

He had to admit, she could really hit. The hit had him gasping under water and he flailed, coming up quickly and choking. When that fit passed, he put a had over his abdomen and groaned. "...Ow."

"I'm really sorry," Mia repeated, her hands fluttering over his shoulders in nervous concern. "I didn't mean to do that. I didn't think you'd grab me."

He waved a hand, shaking his head while the other rubbed the tender spot that Mia had hit. "It's okay. Probably wasn't the smartest move on my part."

She worried her lower lip between her teeth as she watched him. "You probably think I'm such a freak now."

He shook his head and gave her a reassuring smile. "I don't think you're a freak. It's a reflex thing, I get that."

"Yeah?" Her lips curved up again into a hesitant smile. "You can try it now, I won't freak out this time."

"I don't know, you've got pretty killer reflexes." He teased, letting his hand drop away from his abdomen. "Plus, I think it's your turn to exact revenge."

"Revenge, huh." She considered him speculatively, then cupped her hands in the water and slowly lifted them up, reaching on tip-toe to pour it over his head.

He laughed when the water was dumped on him, then shook his head in her direction like a dog. "Nice revenge tactic."

She held her arms up to ward off the stray drops, giggling too. "It's the least I could do after nailing you in the stomach," she said. "So, how well can you swim?"

"I'm debating on whether or not I'll let you live that down." He smirked. "I'm not too bad at it."

"Well if you don't, I can always threaten to do it again," she teased, making a fist. "How about a race?"

"I'll just plan on sleeping with one eye open," he flicked more water at her. "You're on. How far?"

Mia considered the expanse of sea. "Say, from here to that buoy?" she said, pointing to one that was a fair distance away, but not far enough out to take them out of sight from Ollie and Chloe on the shore.

Michael followed her finger then nodded. "Okay. First one there and back." And he dove in.

Mia watched him dive with wide eyes, then shouted "Cheater!" before merrily diving after him with quick strokes.

He heard her shout and managed a sort of grin as he continued swimming as fast as he could to the buoy.

Despite his head start, she caught up quickly. They didn't call her 'Speedy' for nothing.
