The party is in a large, classically-decorated ballroom, hundreds and hundreds of tiny white lights brighten the room.

A live orchestra is playing in one corner of the room, waiters and waitresses handing out Hors d'oeuvres from silver trays, along with glasses of fine wine and champagne.

"I'm sorry I didn't say anything about it." He let out a breath, glancing at her. "She wasn't ready to tell you, and I didn't feel like it was my place."

Tess nods. "It's all right. She did when she was ready. I wouldn't expect anyone to betray that kind of confidence."

He nods a little, drawing in a breath. "How've you been? And the kids?"

"We're doing well. Alexander wanted to come when he saw me getting all dressed up." That makes her smile more genuinely. "I think I'm going to have to throw him one hell of a birthday party."

He can't help but smile at that. "I have no doubt you'll pull it off with flying colors."

"I don't know. A child's party isn't the Daily Planet Christmas event," she points out, still smiling. "It's a whole different ballgame."

"True. But somehow I think you'll manage just fine." There's amusement in his voice.
